2006 Incentive Awards Program Annual Banquet June 10, 2006
The 2006 Incentive Awards Program Annual Banquet is scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 10, at the Hilton Oakland Airport Hotel. This year, we are very excited to present as our keynote speaker Wendy Tokuda, long-standing member of the KRON 4 News team, award-winning journalist, best-selling author of children's books, and founder of the wonderful non-profit organization Students Rising Above.
The dinner has become a very important public event, bringing together hundreds of business, political, and educational leaders, philanthropists and others, to pay tribute to exceptional young people who have worked hard to achieve success and who are now inspiring
AKEELAH AND THE BEE Movie Premiere April 20, 2006
In partnership with their co-producers Linosgate Films, Cal alumna Nancy Hult Ganis and her husband Sid Ganis, President of the Academy of Motion Pictures, have generously selected UC Berkeley’s IAP Pre-collegiate Academy, along with two other organizations in the Los Angeles area, to be honored at the red carpet gala launching the film AKEELAH AND THE BEE. This important new film starring Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne features the story of a girl from South Los Angles trying to make to the National Spelling Bee.
We are inviting key donors and volunteers, as well as prominent alumni in Los Angeles whose advocacy is critical to our work. We will also invite selected IAP Pre-collegiate Academy Scholars, and representatives from the Los Angeles Unified School District with whom the program works so closely. The premier will be held at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Samuel Goldwyn Theatre, and will be followed by a reception in the lobby of the Academy Theater with the starts of the movie.
Bay Area Osher Scholars and Fellows Reception April 17, 2006
The Bernard Osher Foundation reception honoring Bay Area Osher Scholars and Fellows is scheduled to be held from 5-7pm at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. An invitation-only event for current Osher Scholars, Osher Fellows, Osher Scholars Alumni, campus Chancellors, Presidents and Provosts, and faculty and staff Program Advisors, there are likely to be several hundred participants. The reception is being held to recognize the accomplishments of all those who have benefited from the Oshers’ generous philanthropy, and to thank those who have helped those recipients on the path to academic success.
Cal Prep Dedication Ceremony - November 14, 2005
The UC Berkeley/Aspire Early College Academy, known as Cal Prep, celebrated its dedication ceremony. Cal Prep is a unique early college secondary school, co-conceived and co-constructed by Aspire Public Schools and the University of California, Berkeley, for urban students who face obstacles to college-going.
Around 200 parents, teachers, educators, UC Berkeley professors and administrators, community members, local officials, and other supporters were in attendance. Chancellor Robert Birgeneau and Aspire Co-Founder and CEO Don Shalvey served as keynote speakers for the event, which was highlighted by a student essay from Natassija Jordan (Class of 2011), and concluded with a welcome song from the students at Millsmont Academy, which is also a part of the Aspire Public Schools family.
IAP Multi-Cultural Thanksgiving Potluck - November 14, 2005
The Incentive Awards Program celebrated its annual Multi-Cultural Thanksgiving Potluck. Incentive Awards Scholar Christina Anderson served as MC for the evening. The event was highlighted by great food, a raffle drawing, and musical entertainment provided by Student Affairs Development Office Manager Rhamon Serbellon.
Vice Chancellor Genaro Padilla attended the event, with his mother as a guest. Director of Development and Community Relations Maryellen Himell attended. Incentive Awards staff in attendance included Elvia Villalobos, Duyen Tran, and Layla Naranjo.
IAP Fall Reception - October 17, 2005
Chancellor and Mrs. Robert Birgeneau hosted the annual fall reception for new Incentive Awards Scholars in the gardens at their residence, University House. It was a wonderful occasion that celebrated the "family" aspects of the program, as well as the students' achievements. Continuing and alumni Scholars, as well as campus partners, school counselors, district supervisors, selection committee volunteers and donors - including naming donors Bernard and Barbro Osher - were all present to help welcome the newest members of the Incentive Awards family to campus.

Early Childhood Education Program and Center Groundbreaking Ceremony - September 7, 2005
The Early Childhood Education Program and Center celebrated groundbreaking for the new facility, which will serve 74 children of students, faculty and staff.
Dignitaries in attendance included Chancellor Robert Birgeneau and his wife Mary-Catherine, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Genaro Padilla, and Early Childhood Education Committee Co-Chairs Associate Vice Chancellor Harry LeGrande and Professor Alison Gopnik.
