Welcome to Student Affairs!
When I accepted the position of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs in 1995, I realized I was facing a formidable challenge. As a professor in the English department, I had long been aware that too many students felt "lost in the shuffle" at Berkeley - frustrated and alone as they attempted to determine a major and map out a course of study, uncertain where to go or whom to ask for help, and in some cases lacking even suitable housing. Even students as exceptional as Cal's can hardly be expected to make the most of their opportunities if they are having difficulty simply getting their bearings, or finding an appropriate place to live.
Today, I am extremely happy to say that we are listening to the concerns of students, parents, and alumni, and we have been answering them effectively.
We are:
- Providing broad and diverse access to the University
- Enriching the first-year experience; and
- Ensuring that students make the right connections to advisors
and counselors as they choose majors, pursue their studies,
and prepare for careers.
Together, these three areas represent a continuum as students
transition to Berkeley, experience their first year, and prepare
to become tomorrow's scholars and leaders.
- We are also moving aggressively to strengthen the use of technology in the myriad ways we communicate with prospective and current students,
- We are expanding the learning environment by creating dynamic living and learning communities in the residence halls, which now accommodate over 95 percent of our freshmen, and
- This year, Residential and Student Service Programs continue with their efforts to build new student housing close to campus, as well as modernizing existing residence halls and opening a state-of-the-art dining facility.
We hope you will take the opportunity to learn more about all the many ways in which the Division of Student Affairs serves the Berkeley community by visiting the many links from this site.
