Student Organization - Name Submission Steps

On the following page you will be asked to

1) enter a name for your new student organization, and
2) provide a purpose statement

Review the following guidelines and then click NEXT at the bottom of the screen to enter and submit your group's name;

 NAME Guidelines

Organization names must be in compliance with the Berkeley Campus Regulations and the Office of Marketing and Business Outreach policies.

  • The following names and corresponding variations may not be used in your student group name*:
    • UC Berkeley
    • California
    • Cal
    • UC
    • UCB
  • ‘Berkeley’ can be used in your student group name only if it is used as a reference to geographic location, such as:
    • at Berkeley
    • of Berkeley
  • New groups may not have the same name as currently existing groups on campus
    • Search existing campus organizations to ensure that your group name is not already being used

EXAMPLES

  • Public Speaking Group at Berkeley – APPROVED
  • Public Speaking Group of Berkeley – APPROVED
  • Public Speaking Group at UC Berkeley – NOT APPROVED
  • Public Speaking at Cal – NOT APPROVED
  • Berkeley Public Speaking Group – NOT APPROVED
  • Cal Public Speaking Group – NOT APPROVED
  • California Public Speaking Group – NOT APPROVED
  • Public Speaking Group at California – NOT APPROVED
  • Public Speaking Group, Berkeley – NOT APPROVED
  • Berkeley Campus Public Speaking – NOT APPROVED

*Groups established prior to this policy’s implementation can use these terms in their student group name.

 PURPOSE Statement

A purpose statement (or mission statement) defines what the group you are organizing wants to accomplish.  What is the reason this group is being formed?  The following are sample purpose statements:

  • “Psi Chi is a national honor society whose purpose shall be to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology.” – Psi Chi, The National Honor Society in Psychology
  • "Campus Life and Leadership guides the learning journey of students as they explore leadership and social change in their communities." – Campus Life and Leadership, UC Berkeley
