BACKGROUND
Each year, over 600 student organizations register with the Office of Student Life and many faculty and staff volunteer to serve club advisors. Each Advisor becomes a valuable partner in the personal development of the students involved.
The Office of Student Life recognizes that significant learning takes place outside the formal classroom setting. Cal students who get involved with registered student organizations are given the opportunity to develop and practice their communication skills, to develop, promote, implement, and evaluate ideas and activities, and to understand the steps needed to initiate desirable change in their community. However, in order for effective growth and learning to occur, RSO advisors become an integral voice of experience, reflection and advice.
Research indicates that participation in RSOs supports the retention and graduation rates of the students involved. This is particularly the case for students who are first generation college students and students from underrepresented backgrounds.
It is through the guidance of the advisors that students develop the qualities of responsible leadership for a diverse and global society.
