Student Publications at Cal

Student Publications at Cal have roots that go back more than one hundred and thirty years to the publication of the first edition of The College Echo (predecessor of today's Daily Californian) in 1871.  Today more than sixty student publications exist on the Berkeley campus.  These range from the Blue and Gold yearbook to, the Daily Cal, the Heuristic Squelch, and the Berkeley Poetry Review along with an incredible variety of other academic, news, scientific, political, and cultural publications.  Additionally, publications such as Al Bayan, Hardboiled, La Voz, and Onyx Express contribute to the pluralism of the Berkeley campus.

What other activity gives you the opportunity to reach a substantial audience with your ideas, your creativity, your research, and other skills? And on top of that, to get responses!

Involvement in a student publication will help you develop your writing, artistic, editing, and teamwork skills — which will be valuable to you in both your studies and in your career.

Here's an activity where the product is concrete — a printed publication — and can wind up on a professor's desk, in a library, or in a resume or portfolio.
