Purpose: Mission Statement: Our mission is to give hope and raise funds for the medical treatment of indigenous children in the Andes suffering from aplastic anaemia as a result of pollution and environmental contamination caused by mining, oil drilling and pesticides. Aplastic Anemia is anemia that is characterized by defective function of the blood-forming organs (or bone marrow) and is caused by toxic agents (chemicals or X-rays) or is idiopathic in origin. Our specific aims include: 1) To provide funds for the DNA testing needed to find matching donors, 2) To provide funds for blood transfusions for patients, 3) To provide funds for bone marrow transplants, 4) To engage corporate sponsors for the medical treatment of each child, 5) To secure sponsorship for the education of the effected children following treatment, 6) To raise awareness of the effects of transnational corporations operating in the Andes, specifically on the indigenous populations and surrounding environment.

Purpose: We are a student research and implementation group focusing on global health issues. We send students abroad for a month to collect information; afterwards, we take the collected information back to Berkeley to further discuss and design ways to solve the problems facing the local residents. Then, we take our designed implementations back to the country to, hopefully, impact the residents and resolve the issues. We will also do follow-ups to assess the efficiency and success of our solution. If our solution is successful and sustainable, we will move on to the next region or the next country. Everything will be planned by the students and completed by the students with helps from other experienced parties.
