Public Service Programs


Ally program

Become an LGBTQ ally and promote a safe inclusive campus environment for all through a workshop that examines the intersections of racism, sexism, and other systems of oppression.

Alternative Breaks

Join student-led groups of 10-15 over a winter or spring break to learn about social issues affecting communities in the Kumeyaay Reservation, Central Valley, San Diego-Mexico border and New Orleans.

Berkeley YMCA
Teen Programs

Provide social and academic support to youth at Berkeley High School as a one-on-one mentor.

Blueprint Leadership Program

Participate in an intensive 1-year leadership development experience that includes engaging workshops, a social justice project, and mentoring from a leadership coach.

Bonner Leaders

Serve as a student leader of one of Cal Corps' programs or as a Volunteer Manager at a local community organization. Bonner Leaders receive $1500 for 300 hours of service and intensive leadership development training.

BUILD (Bears United in Literacy Development)

Join over 200 Cal students who are trained and paid to serve as literacy tutors for K-8 youth at 16 local schools during the summer and/or academic year. (Paid positions are for work-study eligible students only).

Cal in Local Government

Learn and serve your community through internships with the local government, and earn units by participating in enriching weekly seminars.

Cal in the Capital

Join 75 students each summer and serve in a wide range of internships in Washington DC. All participants are required to participate in a spring DeCal course.

Coaching Corps

Learn how to be a sports coach and serve low-income youth. Activities include soccer, basketball, dance, and martial arts.

Destination: College AmeriCorps

Provide tutoring and college advising services for Bay Area low-income youth, receive a monthly stipend and $1000 education award and intensive training.

Fraternity and Sorority Service Initiative

Cal Corps helps CalGreek fraternities and sororities develop meaningful service opportunities for members, ex: the "Adopt a School" initiative.

Greening Berkeley Initiative

Go Green by volunteering for creek restoration, urban gardening, and other environmental restoration projects.

New Orleans Summer Internship Program

Help rebuild the Gulf Coast as a summer Intern. Join 6-10 undergraduate for 6-week in New Orleans. $1,000 stipended.

Oakland Based Urban Gardens (OBUGS)

Assist teachers with lessons in ecology, horticulture, and nutrition for K-3 youth in the school garden.

Queery Speakers Bureau

Attend periodic workshops where members of Cal's LGBTQA community speak about their experiences.

Residential Service Initiative

Participate in one-time and ongoing community service projects through the residential halls.

Service and Peace Fellowship

Join a student organized program that includes an annual Soul Food for the Activist Retreat, regular workshops on service and spiritual development, and a fall semester class.

SHAPE Peer Educators

Train to be a peer educator on issues of sexual and relationship/dating violence through student workshops and help organize an annual event - Take Back the Night.

Social Issues Social Action

Enroll in service-learning courses that apply the concept of volunteerism as a means to address critical community needs.

Student Initiated Community Projects Program

Apply for student group sponsorship and grant opportunities. Eligible groups develop and run service programs that address vital community needs.

UC Student Regent

Represent all University of California students (10 campuses) on the Board of Regents for a 2-year term. February applications.

Volunteer Database

Make a difference by getting involved in one of hundereds of local community groups' volunteer opportunities.

Volunteer Program at GenEq

Volunteer and help with GenEq's numerous LGBT and women's programs on campus.

WriterCoach Connection

Serve as a writing coach in local middle and high schools.

Youth Emergency Assistance Hostel (YEAH)

Volunteer to help provide seasonal shelter, food and support for homeless youth ages 18-25.

Youth Support Program

Join over 100 student volunteers that serve as one-on-one mentors to youth at Willard Middle School.
