Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why is it called Blueprint?
A: The word “blueprint” evokes many ideas such as creation, building, or designing as well as images of a map or a plan. This program has a goal of helping students to create their own personal definitions of leadership and to explore ways of putting them into action. In other words, this program helps you create a “blueprint” for becoming a leader of the next generation.
Q: What do I get out of participating?
A: You get the experience that you make. You will have the opportunity to learn from and grow with other student leaders, make connections with staff Advisors, network and take risks in trying new things while you work to create your own personal definition of leadership and put it into action. There are also other incentives such as scholarships available to some students who complete the program and recognition at the Student Leadership Awards in May!
Q: What exactly do I do during the program?
A: Participants must complete a set of requirements over the course of a year. The program requirements are:
- Create a Personal Development Plan
- Attend the Blueprint Retreat (Fall) and the Student Leadership Symposium (Spring)
- Attend 6 leadership workshops/trainings
- Attend 6 Cohort Meetings with Leadership Coaches
- Create and Implement a Social Justice Project (with Cohort)*
- Complete a guided Leadership Portfolio
- Write a personal reflection paper on your year-long experience growing as a leader
Q: What is a Cohort and what are the Cohort Meetings?
A: Cohorts are small groups, generally of 7-10 students and 2 Leadership Coaches who meet together 6 times throughout the year. In many ways, your cohort is like a family. It is a small group that you can rely on for support throughout the year. These forums provide a small continuous group to come together with in order to share experiences, ask questions, get feedback, and grow from each other. Each cohort meeting will feature a different discussion topic and attendance at all cohort meetings is required.
Q: When do I begin completing requirements?
A: As soon as you turn in your Personal Development Plan you have completed the first requirement. Requirements must be completed on scheduled dates/times. Check the Program Schedule for your year of participation for mandatory dates.
Q: Why does this not seem like a program I am used to?
A: Because it’s not. The Blueprint program is not a traditional program where you might have 10 workshops that you are required to attend before receiving a certificate of completion. This program is unique in that it builds upon experience (many of which students are already having) and provides many opportunities for students to choose what their activities will be. There certainly is recognition at the end of the year, but it is for participating in experiences and reflecting on those, rather than simply attending a list of workshops.
Q: What if I still have questions?
A: Feel free to contact Nurredina Workman, Program Coordinator at (510) 642-6772 or at nurredinaworkman@berkeley.edu.
