LGBT Workshops

Cal Ally Program     90 Minutes
Facilitators Request: Room with moveable chairs (preferred), 8-30 participants, at least two weeks notice, need wall space and blue tape
In this interactive seminar, participants will become a visible part of the Cal Ally program, which seeks to create and maintain a safer and more inclusive campus environment for all. During this workshop, participants receive knowledge, insight, and an opportunity to discuss the implications of homophobia and heterosexism. This workshop addresses heterosexual privilege, as well as the intersections of racism, sexism, and other systems of oppression. Participants receive a packet of LGBT resources, which contains information such as a list of websites, and a list of basic definitions of commonly used terminology within the LGBT community. Participants also receive an Ally Decal or Button. The objective of this workshop is to equip allies with the knowledge and resources that enable them to assist LGBT or questioning persons. This workshop encourages dialogue regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Fresh Out of the Box    90 Minutes
Facilitators Request: Room with moveable chairs (preferred), 8-30 participants, at least two weeks notice, need wall space and blue tape
This interactive workshop explores gender roles and sexism by looking at language and behavior.  Using fun exercises participants engage in dialogue about sexuality and the social construction of gender.  This workshop addresses male privilege, the intersection of racism, sexism, and heterosexism.

Queery Speaker's Bureau    90 Minutes
Facilitators Request: Room with moveable chairs (preferred), 8-30 participants, at least two weeks notice
A panel of Cal LBGTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer) students provides a forum through which you can ask questions and gain exposure to the concerns of the LBGTIQ community.  Speakers tell personal stories and answer questions about their experiences as a LGBTIQ person both here on campus and beyond.  The objective of this workshop is to raise general awareness as well as debunk myths and misinformation about LGBTIQ persons.

Standard SHAPE Workshop    60 - 90 Minutes
SHAPE (Sexual Harassment/Assault Advocacy and Peer Education Program) offers many workshops covering a variety of topics. If you would like more information about SHAPE please contact the SHAPE Student Coordinator at 510-643-9861 or e-mail shape@berkeley.edu.

Alcohol/Safe Partying    60 - 90 Minutes
This workshop is geared specifically for fraternities and sororities looking to fulfill their risk management requirement with an informative and engaging presentation. Subjects include alcohol use and safety, risks associated with alcohol and drug use, tips for how to party safely, and general sexual violence information. Workshop last for about an hour.

Gender Roles    60 - 90 Minutes
Using an uncensored discussion about gender norms in our society, this workshop discusses what gender roles are forced upon us and how being “outside of the box” can lead to dangerous outcomes. This workshop is very interactive and gives participants the tools to think outside of the box. In addition, participants are encouraged to work towards gender equality and the lessening of stigma and violence. Workshop lasts for about an hour.

Healthy Relationships    60 - 90 Minutes
Most college students are involved in some sort of romantic relationship at some point during their time at school. This workshop educates students about what a healthy relationship looks like, and in turn what an unhealthy relationship looks like. In addition, the SHAPE peer educators facilitate a discussion about why it is so hard to get out of an abusive relationship and the steps a person can take to get out of an abusive relationship, how to help a friend, and how to recognize if you are hurting someone. Workshop lasts for about an hour.

Party Like a Rockstar    60 - 90 Minutes
Through interactive activities, factual information and entertaining skits, this workshop educates students new to the college environment about parties. Subjects covered include alcohol safety, risk reduction at parties, sexual violence and consent. Workshop lasts for about an hour.



Gender Workshops

In Gendered Trouble    90 Minutes
Facilitators Request: Room with moveable chairs (preferred), 8-30 participants, at least two weeks notice, need wall space and blue tape
Using case studies from the headlines, this interactive, thought provoking and fun workshop will allow participants to begin discussions on the primary program areas of women, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, sexual harassment/assault, relationship violence and hate crimes that are covered by the Gender Equity Resource Center.

My Gender Workshop    60 - 90 Minutes
Facilitators Request: Room with large table and chairs, 8-30 participants, at least two weeks notice, need collage materials (glue sticks, scissors, magazines, paper, etc.) if available
This interactive workshop explores notions of gender by having participants create collages representing their own gender.  Using these collages, participants engage in dialogue about gender including socialization, roles, presentation and performance.
