The Magnolia Project Summer Service Trip to New Orleans is a three-week service and educational trip from May 25, 2010 - June 15, 2010, organized by students, for students. The purpose of the trip is to participate in the rebuilding effort that is still very much ongoing in post-Katrina New Orleans, to provide emotional support to residents, and to engage with and learn about issues of social justice. Anyone is welcome to sign up for the trip and as part of our objective to be inclusive to students of all backgrounds we will be subsidizing trip costs and encouraging fundraising.
The final per person cost for the trip will include transportation, lodging, and food, and the payment schedule will be determined at the start of the spring semester. Please talk to us if you need any financial assistance.
On the trip, you will have the opportunity to support community members by:
- Servicing and distributing food to low income residents
- Cleaning up the residential environment
- Gutting and rebuilding houses
- Communicating with residents about desired changes and solutions
- Working with youth
All participants will be expected to attend the mandatory decal class taking place every Tuesday from 6-8 throughout the spring semester. The purpose of the decal is to give participants a greater understanding of the geography, history and socioeconomic issues of New Orleans, and thus to make the trip an even better experience. The decal is also an opportunity for us to get to know each other!
