Program Description
The Summer Berkeley United In Literacy Development (Summer BUILD) program trains Cal students to serve as literacy or math tutors to K-8th grade youth in Berkeley after-school programs. Summer BUILD tutors develop teaching and tutoring skills, learn about educational issues in the local community, and earn either education units or an hourly wage through Work Study. At the same time, youth in the community increase their literacy skills and are exposed to the possibility of college.
BUILD operates at 10 sites in Berkeley during the summer. Each Summer BUILD program is managed by a Student Director, who is in charge of hiring and managing the site tutor team in partnership with a staff Program Director employed by the site. Summer BUILD is a part of the national America Reads and America Counts campaigns, and a partner of the Jewish Coalition for Literacy and the Graduate School of Education, both of which provide tutor training support.
The BUILD summer program is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of the City of Berkeley as well as corporate sponsors including AT&T, Bayer Corporation, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, the Berkeley Public Education Foundation, the Berkeley Alliance, and PG&E.
Requirements
All Summer BUILD tutors attend a mandatory orientation. Tutors work at least two full days during the after-school program hours at their site, and are expected to demonstrate professionalism in their work. Tutors must be committed to building the literacy skills of youth, willing to work in a collaborative, team environment, and able to design and lead engaging activities to help children learn. In fall, tutors attend the campus-wide Education Summit.
How to Get Involved
BUILD accepts tutor applications for Fall, Spring and Summer. You must apply online to be a BUILD tutor. Check Important Dates below for BUILD hiring timelines.
