* Damali Burton joins our staff team!
A month after wishing former staff member Dickson Lam our best on his journey to graduate school, our Center is excited to welcome Damali Burton as our Youth and Student Groups Program Manager. Damali comes to us from her previous experience as a Program Manager for City Year in San Jose, where she ran their in-school service program in partnership with San Jose public schools. Before City Year, Damali was the Community Development Specialist at the Girl Scouts of Utah in Salt Lake City, where she designed curricula and led outreach to Title I schools and to families who could not afford youth services. Please join us welcoming her! You can reach her by email or phone [510.642.0307].
* Hundreds of Berkeley youth celebrate Summer BUILD
On June 25th, over 400 Berkeley youth joined Mayor Tom Bates, Vice Chancellor Harry Le Grande, and 70 Cal tutors to kick-off Cal Corps' summer literacy and nutrition program. In partnership with the City of Berkeley, Summer BUILD keeps youth reading and physically active while out of school. This year's kick-off included face painting, obstacle courses, and of course, our annual book give-a-way where every youth walks away with a free book.
* Magnolia Project service trip returns!
After two and half weeks in New Orleans, 40 Cal student volunteers return from their service trip. Four years after Hurricane Katrina, volunteers are still working to gut houses, learn about community members' experiences, and distribute food to low-income residents. Ravi Patel, current Magnolia Project Director, blogs about his third summer on the Magnolia Project service trip.
*Cal Corps will host first informational session for staff
