Program Description
The Berkeley United In Literacy Development (BUILD) program trains Cal students to serve as literacy or math tutors to K-8th grade youth in Berkeley or Oakland after-school programs. BUILD runs during the summer, fall, and spring semesters. BUILD tutors develop teaching and tutoring skills, learn about educational issues in the local community, and earn either education units or an hourly wage through Work Study. At the same time, youth in the community increase their literacy or math skills and are exposed to the possibility of college.
BUILD operates at 14 different afterschool program sites in Berkeley and Oakland, including two math sites and at 11 sites in Berkeley during the summer. Each BUILD program is managed by a BUILD Student Director, who is in charge of hiring and managing the site tutor team in partnership with a staff Program Director employed by the site. BUILD is a part of the national America Reads and America Counts campaigns, and a partner of the Jewish Coalition for Literacy and the Graduate School of Education, both of which provide tutor training support.
BUILD is generously funded by Campus Life and Leadership at UC Berkeley, the federal Work Study program, and the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Berkeley. The BUILD summer program is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of the City of Berkeley as well as corporate sponsors including AT&T, Bayer Corporation, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, the Berkeley Public Education Foundation, the Berkeley Alliance, and the Thomas J. Long Foundation which has allowed BUILD to support Education 195B, a literacy tutoring course that is required for BUILD Student Directors.
Requirements
All BUILD tutors attend a mandatory orientation and at least two 1 ½ hour trainings each semester. Tutors work at least two full days during the after-school program hours at their site, and are expected to demonstrate professionalism in their work. Tutors must be committed to building the literacy or math skills of youth, willing to work in a collaborative, team environment, and able to design and lead engaging activities to help children learn. In fall, tutors attend the campus-wide Education Summit.
How to Get Involved
BUILD accepts tutor applications for Fall, Spring and Summer. You must apply online to be a BUILD tutor. Check Important Dates below for BUILD hiring timelines.
Returning BUILD tutors can also apply to be a Student Director to lead a BUILD site. Student Directors are responsible for managing the partnership with site staff, hiring and supervising all tutors at the site, overseeing site activity planning, approving tutor timesheets, assessing student progress, and organizing field trips to campus.
