SPECIAL  COURSES
The Incentive Awards Program, in partnership with other campus departments, offers three specialized courses targeting specific populations within the Program.

The Freshmen Course is a two-unit (P/NP) class introducing incoming Scholars to campus life at Cal by examining the structure, function, and academic mission of the University. It surveys the wide range of academic support services on campus, and explores various extracurricular activities at Cal and in the community. It provides Incentive Awards Scholars with the necessary tools and information to strengthen their presentation skills, utilizing a seminar format with presentations from advisors and staff representatives from various resource offices on campus. The course serves as an opportunity to bring the freshmen Scholars together for community building purposes. For more information please contact Cristina Rojas at 643-7267.

The IAP Community and Leadership Development Class is a two-unit (P/NP) leadership and service course offered to interested and motivated Scholars. This course focuses explicitly on developing student leadership skills through theoretical and practical skills-based trainings and contains a series of presentations, exercises and experiential learning activities to help students engage in the practice of socially responsible leadership. The course is designed to enhance students' public service efforts and increase their success as leaders in their communities.

Next Steps: Preparing for Graduate/Professional School, is a two unit Pass/No Pass course facilitated in collaboration with Student Life Advising Services/Educational Opportunity Program during the fall semester. Choosing and applying to graduate/professional schools can be an intimidating process. The goal of the course is to gear students, particularly first-generation and low-income students, toward graduate/professional schools by breaking down the process and going through the various steps of applying. Students will be introduced to various resources and work on their application package throughout the semester. In addition, students will be encouraged to process their feelings and anxieties about the transition.
