Summer Financial Aid

Summer Session Financial Aid at Berkeley.

Eligible Students: Continuing UCB students who attended Fall 2008 and/or Spring 2009, have completed a 2008-2009 FAFSA, have a complete financial aid file, and who are enrolled at least half-time (6 semester units) during the summer session.

Non-eligible students: Students on the degree list for Spring 2009, foreign students, non-UCB students, blocked and dismissed students and Berkeley graduates.

How to Apply

  1. Log onto http://summeraid.berkeley.edu beginning early March to estimate summer eligibility. Estimates are based on the courses you enter into the estimator program. Multiple estimates are allowed.
  2. Beginning early April, you can access an Official Summer Offer Letter, accept/decline your awards, and complete your offer letter online via http://summeraid.berkeley.edu.

IMPORTANT:

  • If you withdraw/drop out/walk away/do not complete your enrolled summer session classes, you will be billed for your financial aid!
  • Only ONE Summer Offer Letter can be submitted. The offer will be based on the courses you are enrolled in at the time you request the offer letter.
  • You will not receive financial aid for wait-listed classes.
  • Once an Official Offer Letter is complete, no changes to your financial aid will be allowed. If you drop or change courses afterwards, your grant and/or loan eligibility may be reduced or cancelled, and you may be billed for funds already disbursed.

Aid will not be increased after an Offer Letter is submitted.

  • July 31, 2009 is the last day to complete your summer offer letter online.

Important Dates and Deadlines

Early March: Estimates of summer financial aid will be available online.

Early April : First day to complete your summer offer letter online.

May 15: Deadline for entering, returning or transfer students to submit an application for financial aid along with their 2008-09 and 2009-10 FAFSAs. (MAY 15 IS NOT THE DEADLINE TO ACCEPT YOUR OFFER LETTER.)

June 18: Session A only--last day to complete your offer letter online to be eligible for a PLUS loan.

July 27: Last day to enroll in classes for summer financial aid.

July 31: Is the last day to submit your Summer Official Offer Letters online.

Reminder: If you accept any summer loans, make sure you have completed your entrance interview and Master Promissory Note.

Types of Summer Financial Aid

Pell Grant

If you did not receive your full Pell Grant in either Fall 2008 or Spring 2009 because you were not enrolled full time or you did not attend college for one of those terms, you may be eligible for part or all of your remaining Pell Grant for Summer Session.

Summer Fee Grant

Some students may be eligible for a Summer Fee Grant. Go to http://summeraid.berkeley.edu beginning early March.

Federal Direct Stafford Loans

  • Students who were not offered the maximum Federal Direct Loan in the 2008-2009 academic year (see maximums listed below), and have at least half-time status for Summer Session may be offered a summer loan.
  • The annual loan maximums are: freshman, $5,500*; sophomores, $6,500*; juniors and seniors, $7,500*;
    *Of the above total maximum loan amounts, at least $2,000 of the total is unsubsidized loan.
  • Independent students may also be eligible for an unsubsidized loan up to the maximum eligibility: freshmen and sophomores, $4,000; juniors and seniors $5,000.
  • First time Federal Direct Loan borrowers must complete a Master Promissory Note and a loan entrance counseling session at http://dlenote.ed.gov.

Parent Loans (PLUS)

Dependent students may be eligible for a summer PLUS Loan.

When you accept a PLUS Loan, a Borrower Information Sheet and a Plus Authorization Form will be mailed to your permanent address.

The PLUS Promissory Note, Borrower Information Sheet and a Plus Authorization Form must be turned in two weeks prior to the end of the summer session in which you are enrolled. All three items must be completed by the same parent borrower. Go to http://dlenote.ed.gov

If you expect the PLUS to be denied and converted to an Unsubsidized Loan, then you must complete a Summer PLUS Promissory Note, receive a denial, and after being denied, turn in a "Denied PLUS Form" by July 25.

Those attending session A only, PLUS Promissory Notes must be returned by June 18 if you are expecting your PLUS loan to be denied.

Work-study

2009-2010 academic year work-study may be used during the summer beginning June 1, 2009.

Students who intend to use their work-study during the summer must have a 2009-2010 Financial Aid Offer Letter with work-study listed and there can be no missing documents.

Work-study money earned over the summer (beginning June 1st) will be deducted from your 2009-2010 work-study award.
