You can apply for an emergency loan Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. You need to apply in person at Cal Student Central, 120 Sproul Hall.
If you apply between 9 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., your check will be ready by 1 p.m. the same day. If you apply after 12:15 p.m., your check will be ready at 1 p.m. the next business day. You may pick up your check at 120 Sproul Hall between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. the day it is ready or between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. the following day. If you do not pick up your check in person at 120 Sproul Hall by 4 p.m. on the day after it is issued, we will need to cancel the check.

- Complete an emergency loan application.
- Have a legible student ID, plus one additional photo ID (driver's license, state ID card, or passport).
TYPES OF LOANS FOR FALL AND SPRING SEMESTERS
1. Living Expense Loan: This loan is available to eligible registered students; the maximum amount is $775. If approved, you'll receive a paper check payable to you. You can use your loan to help with short-term financial difficulties such as paying for rent, books, or travel while you are waiting for your financial aid to pay out.
Eligibility requirements:
- You are registered for the semester. A registered student is one who is enrolled in units and has paid at least the minimum amount required toward registration fees.
- You do not have any registration blocks for the current semester.
- You do not have any overdue emergency loans from previous semesters.
- You do not have any outstanding emergency loans from the current semester.
2. CoPayable Loan for Fees: This loan is available to eligible unregistered students; the amount is $1,300. This loan is to help you become registered by making the minimum payment toward your registration fees. The minimum registration amount is set each year in collaboration with the Registrar’s Office. You will receive a paper check that is payable to you and UC Regents. You endorse the check, and as a service to you, we deliver the check to the Billing and Payment Service Office for processing. You will become registered in three business days.

- You are not registered for the semester, but are enrolled in at least one unit.
- You do not have any registration blocks for the current semester.
- You do not have any overdue emergency loans from previous semesters.
A Living Expense Loan is available for Summer Sessions to eligible registered students; the maximum amount is $775.
Eligibility requirements:
- You are registered in Summer Sessions. A registered student is one who is enrolled in units and has paid registration fees.
- You are a continuing student who has completed the previous spring semester.
- You do not have any overdue emergency loans from previous semesters.
- You have repaid any previous Summer Sessions emergency loan(s).
- Loans are interest-free and are due in approximately 60 days.
- You are charged a $20 application fee for each loan.
- Your emergency loan and the application fee are billed through the Campus Accounts Receivable System (CARS) in two business days.

Please make the check payable to "UC Regents" and include your student ID number (SID) and your emergency loan check number or "to pay emergency loan" in the memo area of the check.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FINANCIAL AID RECIPIENTS
If you are receiving financial aid, please be aware that once your financial aid posts to your CARS account, it may pay off the emergency loan and the application fee before the due date. There is no guarantee that this will happen, however, and financial aid may not pay any of it. It is your responsibility to monitor your CARS account activity through Bear Facts.
