Information for Applicants with a Disability FAQs

What is the admissions process for students who have a disability?

Students who share information about their disability on their application for admission or who contact our office to request that their disability be taken into consideration will have the opportunity to submit supplemental information documenting their disability.

Should I reveal my disability on my UC application?

The admissions office recognizes that an applicant’s disability circumstances might affect a student’s academic profile.  The student has the option of sharing this information in their application.  This information will be taken into consideration during the comprehensive review process.

If I do not disclose my disability on my application, how will the admissions office take this into consideration?

If a student chooses not to disclose his/her disability on the application, he/she may contact our office and submit documentation to demonstrate disability (as described below).

What documentations are accepted to verify disability?

You must submit only one of the following types of documentation to demonstrate disability:
1. Copy of a signed Individualized Education Plan or 504 Accommodation Plan (developed by a public high school).
2. Copy of a Letter of Accommodation issued by a School Learning Specialist, or Disabled Students Coordinator/Program & Services.
3. A signed one-page statement from an appropriate professional describing the functional limitations of your disability.

Please send your document(s) to:

Office of Undergraduate Admissions
UC Berkeley
Attention: DSP
110 Sproul Hall #5800
Berkeley, CA 94720-5800

When can I submit documentation to verify disability?

Documentation on disability may be submitted beginning January 2.  The deadline to submit documentation for freshman applicants is February 10, 2008 (transfer applicant deadline is March 17, 2008).   We recommend that you submit documents to the address listed above as soon as possible in this time frame.

Please remember that the UC application for admission filing period is November 1-30, 2007 (deadline November 30th).

What if I choose not to submit disability documentation?

Applicants who do not provide adequate documentation to show disability, may nevertheless have their disability taken into account during the admission process if their application, taken in its entirety, indicates that the individual has encountered unusual obstacles/hardships such that the application merits consideration under the University's comprehensive review process.  This process takes into account a wide range of adverse circumstances that merit consideration when evaluating the individual's application.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions coordinates the application review and admission process.  The Disabled Students Program office is utilized as a resource and has trained admissions officers with experience on disability issues.

NOTICE: the documentation required to establish disability for purposes of consideration during the application for admissions process is NOT sufficient for purposes of establishing disability prerequisite for eligibility for services from the Disabled Students Program while enrolled as a student at University of California, Berkeley. Disability related documentation submitted for consideration during the application process is kept on file by the Admissions Department for a relatively short period of time, solely for use during the application process, and is destroyed thereafter.
